Joanne handles Dispute Resolution matters and has experience in a wide range of complex commercial disputes, in the context of both High Court litigation and arbitration. Her expertise includes contractual disputes, actions in negligence, business and human rights, shareholder disputes, partnership disputes, claims involving breach of directors’ duties, fraud, injunctions and regulatory and public law matters. Joanne is also experienced in collective actions, including commercial disputes arising out of mining and energy projects, for which she has been noted in the mining and minerals entry of the Legal 500. She contributed to Class Actions in England and Wales (second edition, Sweet and Maxwell, 2022). Before joining Temple Bright in 2025, Joanne spent more than 20 years in the disputes division at Herbert Smith in the City (now Herbert Smith Freehills Kramer). She has also spent time working in the in-house legal team at one of the Big Four accountancy firms.
Relevant experience at Temple Bright and previous firms includes:
- Advising a listed mining company in the defence of a group action brought in the English High Court on behalf of in excess of 3700 members of a Zambian community alleging environmental contamination, including in connection with a jurisdictional challenge in the UK Supreme Court.
- Advising Mirabaud & Cie SA in relation to claims in excess of US$200m against 38 defendants by the Kuwaiti Public Institution for Social Security regarding the defendants’ alleged role in the creation and operation of various schemes involving PIFSS’ former Director General.
- Advising Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation plc (ENRC) in relation to the US$2bn damages claim by First Quantum regarding ENRC’s acquisition of an interest in the Kolwezi Tailings Project in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Advising RCI Europe, a time share exchange company, in collective action proceedings brought by 487 current and former customers.
- Advising TUI Travel Plc, easyJet Airline Company, British Airways PLC and the International Air Transport Association in respect of a judicial review claim and reference to the European Court of Justice regarding a judgment concerning the Denied Boarding Regulation.
- Advising Trinity Mirror Plc in relation to its participation at the Leveson Inquiry.
- Advising a leading accountancy firm in relation to a £126m professional negligence dispute with a wealthy private individual regarding the provision of tax advice.
